have now completed my second 3-month session with Alison. I started with KKI after my dual fistula AVM surgery on my lower spine that shut down my left leg. The goal when I started at KKI was to help me get my legs working again, regain my balance, and improve my mobility. I used to run 3 miles multiple times a week, and when I first came to KKI, I could barely walk without a walking stick. Alison listened to me. She said that I could run again, which was 100% doubtful by the end of my first 3-month session. We started with mobility and balance exercises. Then Alison put me in the treadmill water tank to get my motion working with the help of the water. After a couple of water sessions, Alison said we are going to go outside. Within a month, we jogged 1 mile together that was very emotional to me. Then she encouraged me to sign up to run the Roar for the Kids 5K race. My daughter joined me and we started the race with tears in my eyes. I ran for the first half of the race and then walked some but then ran into Alison's arms across the finish line. At age 65, I never thought I would run again, less complete in a race! I am continuing my PT and my strength, motion, and balance have all improved. Of course, I know that I will never be the same after the damage from the AVM in my spine, but Alison and the entire team at KKI have given me the confidence that I can still achieve whatever I want while understanding my limitations.
